Welcome to Zoom IN: A Blog on Inclusive Teaching. As EDIT Media enters its second year, we’re ramping up our efforts to make teaching that supports all of our students even easier.

So, every month in this space, you’ll find a new column written by rotating and guest authors with examples, strategies, and tips for teaching media students in a collaborative and equitable way. Find out more about what your colleagues do in their own teaching, what’s new in research on media education, how to handle difficult situations in the classroom, and how to approach biases or obstacles you may be facing as a faculty member. Check in here to learn about new opportunities for you and your students. And, use this space as a place to ask questions of your own. What do you want to know about how to make your own teaching more inclusive? What’s happening in your own classroom? What issues do you think we, as media faculty, should be talking more about regarding diversity and equity both in and outside the classroom?

We’ll zoom in on practical tools to use in your teaching. We’ll zoom out to talk about what good pedagogy means based on evidence and research.

We won’t have all the answers, but we can create a space for discussing the possibilities and provide paths and support for taking action.

To start, here are a few links we’re sharing with participants at the University Film and Video Association’s 2018 conference at New Mexico State University in Las Cruces. We’re using them to enhance our conversations about inclusive teaching in media classrooms, but they apply to any discipline and any kind of teaching. They’re short and pithy, but they cover important concepts touching a broad swath of our student populations.
