EDIT Media is proud to launch the EDIT 10, a set of 10 Best Practices for Inclusive Teaching in Media Production. The EDIT 10 responds to many years of calls from faculty and students for practical ways to promote equity and inclusiveness in our media production programs.
The EDIT 10 is the culmination of feedback gathered from faculty and students in media production programs around the U.S. Regional focus groups took place in early 2017 in Washington, D.C., Atlanta, San Francisco, and Minneapolis-St. Paul, and represented faculty and students from private, public, and vocational institutions as well as community colleges and historically black colleges and universities. Additional feedback was gathered through a survey of 171 students and 166 instructors about their experiences of inclusion in their production courses. A comprehensive literature review of inclusive teaching practices further undergirded the development of these practices.
The document would not have been possible without the significant contributions of faculty and students throughout the U.S. These practices were written collaboratively, including input and revisions from faculty in the University Film and Video Association‘s Gender Caucus and Diversity and Inclusion Caucus. This document is thus the result of extensive collective effort and consensus-building.
The EDIT 10 was supported in part by a Research Initiation and Development grant from the University of Michigan-Dearborn and by sponsorship from the University Film and Video Association.
