“Popularised by cartoonist Alison Bechdel (see her comic ‘The Rule’ from Dykes to Watch Out For below), the test is actually attributed to her friend Liz Wallace. It looks at whether films have realistic female characters in them by applying three rules. To pass the Bechdel Test, a film:

1. Has to have at least two [named*] women in it

2. Who have a conversation with each other

3. About something other than a man”
